A Blown fibre system is an exceptionally flexible and cost-effective optical communications system designed for both backbone and fibre to the desk.
Blown fibre achieves its cost-effectiveness and flexibility by separating the network into two discrete elements:
- Passive duct infrastructure
- High performance optical fibres
Blown fibre has numerous advantages over conventional fibre cable, especially in the large network:
Deferred cost
Installing Blown fibre and any fibre needed at the outset (25% of the eventual total according to surveys) can cut first-year costs by up to 65% when compared with conventional fibre cable.
Ease of upgrade with no disruption
Fibre is blown-in to the existing infrastructure with no disruption to existing office space or staff, an impossibility when adding new conventional cable.
Change or add new fibres
The simplest way to do this is to blow new fibre into microducts as and when needed. Install spare capacity to allow for this or simply blow out any redundant fibres using compressed air. Investment in the Microduct infrastructure is never lost.
Simple repairs
When a conventional optical cable suffers damage the entire length must be replaced or expensive splicing operations performed to effect repair. If Blown fibre microducts are damaged it is a simple matter of push-fitting a new length using pneumatic connectors and blowing in new fibre from the comfort of the equipment room.
The flexibility of the Blown fibre system allows networks to be configured and reconfigured quickly during initial installation and at any time thereafter to meet changing requirements. Once installed, the Blown fibre network can be switched to the latest fibre technology with the minimum of fuss and disruption.
