Case Studies > Terminal 5

Demand for air travel in the South East is estimated to double in the next 20 years. Growth is required and thus Heathrow are currently constructing a 5th terminal. This is a 260-hectare site for the new terminal and is within the airport’s perimeter road, between the two existing runways.

The 5th terminal is to include a core terminal building, two satellites and a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Control tower.

Trescray successfully won the installation, termination, testing and hand-over of a fibre-optic cabled network, for the use of the private LAN supporting the Public Address and Voice Alarm (PA/VA) system on the Fire Alarm sub-project.

The project consisted of In-building fire enhanced fibre within Terminals T5A & T5B, Car Park, Track Transit System, and Energy Centre. In addition Trescray installed a network of Campus fire enhanced fibre links between these buildings.

Gary Elvins, Trescray's project manager said, "This is one of the largest fibre optical projects in the world at the moment. This is a vast site and my team of up to 50 engineers installed thousands upon thousands of metres of cable in a complex environment. It is a credit to their ability."
